2014 Leveret Estate Reserve Hawkes Bay Syrah
Wine Features
Vibrant red berry fruits, maraschino cherries with hints of hops, allspice and white pepper. A defined palate of bright fruit, slender elegant tannins and a clean cherry cola finish.
The fruit for this wine was grown at our Tantallon vineyard in the Bridge Pa sub region of Hawkes Bay. The soils of the area are the result of deposits of river soils from ancient floods and changes in the river course over time. These pebbly, mineral rich soils reflect heat and are very free draining, which makes them ideal for the growing of Syrah. Individual parcels of fruit were chosen based on clone, crop yield and more extensive canopy management for this wine.
The lower yielding fruit and extra attention to detail that has gone into this wine has led to a full display of the quality of Hawkes Bay Syrah. Approximately 5% of viognier was co-fermented with the syrah must. Cold Soaking and draining-off were both used on the components of the blend. Fermentation maceration by pump over for ten days, followed by MLF in tank, preceded nine months barrel maturation in 50% one-year old French oak barriques.
