Major Parameters of Wool
The value that is placed on wool comes down to the processing capabilities of the wool fibre. Finer the micron, length and strength of the staple, colour of the wool are the main factors.
Micron or the diameter of the fibre determines whether it can be either put on the skin or whether it is robust enough to withstand heavy foot traffic. Fine micron wool 15-22 goes into making apparel products whereas 35-40 micron wool is highly suited for making carpet.
Length and Strength will determine the spinning capabilities. Longer staples and the strength of the staple will determine whether it gets combed and spun as semi worsted yarn or if it is short and weak then it will be carded and spun into yarn using woollen spinning machinery.
The colour of the wool determines the dyeing capabilities. White wool can be dyed any shade of colour which has a higher value. Wool that is yellow has only a limited colour range it can be dyed.
